Boating Safety Classes - 2009

As part of the Flotilla's Public Education Program, Flotilla 2-7 offers many opportunities for the public to attend a Boating Safety Class.  In fact, as well as numerous other special awards for Public Education, Flotilla 2-7 was named the 2007 Most Active Flotilla in Public Education for District 11-South!

Bernie Granich is the Flotilla's 'Most Active' Instructor

Flotilla 2-7's policy is to invite our students to come back to later sessions of our classes to attend those they might have missed or would like to repeat, and at no additional charge.

And... most insurance companies will provide a discount on your boat insurance if you successfully complete the Boating Skills & Seamanship Course! (a Certificate and a wallet card is issued upon successful completion)

Weekend Navigator

Weekend Navigator Book Cover

The 12-lesson session of the Weekend Navigator Course, the newest boating class offered by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, will begin Thursday evenings on February 26th, 2009 at 7:00pm. This course will teach the modern day boater equipped with GPS and other electronic navigation tools (chart plotter, radar, etc.) how to be safer boaters.  This course is held at the Orange County Fire Authority - Fire Station # 6 located at 3180 Barranca Parkway, Irvine, CA (between Jamboree & Harvard).
You will learn how to use traditional navigation techniques, using paper charts; plotting tools; hand-bearing compass; and other tools, in conjunction with your marine electronics during the three steps of navigation: 1) Pre-Voyage planning (selecting safe paths and plotting your planned course on your paper chart); 2) Navigating while underway - monitoring your progress utilizing navigation aids which appear on your chart; and 3) Double-Checking - confirming you are where you think you are - comparing GPS readings against your surroundings. Keep in mind, to be a safe boater, you should never rely solely on a single means of plotting your position.  (click here for a course description).  The cost is $80 (includes text & student study guides)
